Helen Womack, former British correspondent in Moscow, author of the book "The Ice Walk" talks about Russian politics, difficulties of the opposition, war in Ukraine.
Ms. Helen Womack worked as a British correspondent in Moscow from 1985 to 2015. She was a witness to several political twists under three Kremlin leaders, from Gorbachev's perestroika to Yeltsin's market reforms and Putin's reimposition of "order".
Her book "The Ice Walk" has just come out in a new edition updated with events of the Ukraine war. The book is mainly about ordinary Russians and how they survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and the turbulent changes that followed.
Her latest article on Russia has been published earlier this year by News Decoder, a site set up by former Reuter correspondents to help young people understand international news. https://news-decoder.com/living-in-a-closed-society/?fbclid=IwAR1YoYE48mmZ9I_tY72QlzysnqcWMpo7-Zpci27s-5omQjfxzSgapAm3m5Y
On this occasion, she will talk about the cycles of freeze and thaw that one can observe in Russian politics; the difficulties of the opposition in the current freeze, and the war in Ukraine.
